So, who is Phil Curme ?

Under the Duckworth Oak, Redoubt Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey - May 2007

First, my work; I am presently Head of Channels for the Commercial arm of Lloyds TSB Bank plc. Then, my play; In my spare time (such as it is!) I arrange battlefields tours and specialise in difficult to get to locations such as the Russian Federation and the Ukraine. I undertake occasional work for the BBC and am a regular speaker on the military history circuit. The lure of good company, a connection with history and adventurous travel is just to great for me to ignore. For that reason I intend to visit and study in depth at least one battlefield every year.

Members of my family who have served in the armed forces included my Great Uncle who was a Royal Marine Artilleryman on HMS Tiger and my Great Grandfather, Gilbert Price, who worked at the pay masters office at Scapa Flow. I was born and brought up in Portsmouth and spent many happy hours listening to the Royal Marine Band at Eastney Barracks during my formative years.

A Great Great Grandfather, Arthur Taylor, served with the 17th Regiment during the Crimean War and his service record includes mention of the Siege of Sebastopol. He finished his career as a Lieutenant Colonel with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Arthur's son,  Bernard Taylor, served with the Royal Marines throughout World War 1.

Another Great Great Grandfather, Alfred Baker, served for 30 years with the 67th Foot and I am presently researching one of the actions he was involved in - the storming of the Taku Forts in China - August 1860. I hope to visit China before to long.
