11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment

Arthur Abbiss (Above) stands outside Melbourn Place School in Cambridge. Having volunteered a few months previously he has just been issued with his new uniform. Arthur worked at Eastman's butchers shop in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire although he originally came from Hitchin in Hertfordshire. By the time that he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 he had been promoted to Corporal. Arthur, who was 24 years old when he was killed, has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. (Thanks to Cliff Brown for this photograph).
